Sustainable Design China Summit 2023 | Looking to the future

A must-visit for designers, architects, and developers alike, the Sustainable Design China Summit 2023 has revealed the highlights to expect from its upcoming event. 

The Sustainable Design China Summit will take place at the Beijing Exhibition Centre from 21st-23rd September 2023. Following on from its successful launch in 2022, the event returns this year at a new venue with increased exhibition space and specially curated installations and features. 

The event’s focus will be on innovative, nature-positive solutions and sustainable material uses for the built environment. According to the event organisers, attention will specifically be centred on “circular regenerative strategies and groundbreaking net zero design concepts”.

Sustainable Design China Summit 2023: the six key themes

Day One (21st September) – Designing a Sustainable Future & Circular Design Matters

The opening day will set the tone with the time of Designing a Sustainable Future, with an opening session by Orianna Fielding, Chief Sustainability Advisor for the Sustainable Design China Summit. 

Afternoon sessions are focused on the theme of Circular Design Matters and include discussions on the Circular Economy Boosts Carbon Peaking Carbon Neutrality.

Materials Designer and Curator Chris Lefteri, who also has a material installation at the Summit featuring 100 different design materials, will speak about sustainable materials. 

Day Two (22nd September) – On the path to Net Zero & Towards a Greener Future

The second day will tackle with the theme of On the Path to Net Zero, including an examination of How Scientific and Technological Innovation Promotes Zero Carbon Cities Planning and Design by Dr Zhang Yalong, Executive Director of SISD (Science-Innovation Institute of Sustainable Development, Shenzhen). 

The theme of Towards a Greener Future, held in conjunction with BRE (Building Research Establishment), will include a welcome speech from Gary Zhao, General Manager of BRE China, followed by a series of talks on creating a sustainable future.

Day Three (23rd September) – Holistic Hospitality & The Empathetic Workplace 

For the third and final day, the theme of Holistic Hospitality will be examined through sessions on Hyper Local Design with Tina Tang from The Tang Hotel, and EOSO hotel founder and designer Aoyama Shuhei. There will also be a panel session on How Hotels are Blending Design and Technology for a Greener Tomorrow. 

The Empathetic Workplace will be explored through sessions on Creating the Positive Workplace Experience by Design, with contributions from Qing Ye, Chairman of Shenzhen Institute of Building Research Co Ltd. Topics of flexibility and wellbeing in workplaces will also be discussed throughout following sessions. 

Speaking ahead of the anticipated event, Show Director Zhuo Tan, says: “We are proud of what we achieved in the inaugural edition of the Summit and will look to build on that success, providing a unique platform for senior decision makers to take part in discussions, network and make new connections in the world of sustainable design.”
