Trace Architects and YAM Studios join forces to create an urban sanctuary | Floating amongst the trees

Trace Architects and YAM Studios join forces to design a new build home for a family of four. Located on the edge of a Wimbledon golf course, Home Park House now takes advantage of the site’s rare vista of London while resembling the floating glass boxes of an early modernist house.

Although Trace Architects were blessed with “free rein” over the design of this London dwelling, they had to consider the site’s strict planning restrictions which stipulated that new builds must enhance the conservation area they call home. Now, where stark crisp outlines share a space with the surrounding treetops, the property’s modern aesthetic is well and truly embraced by nature.

The main living spaces have the feeling of “floating over the site and being in the trees” the designers tell us. “We looked at the Stahl House case study as a precedent for floating over the surrounding view.”

Also ready to embrace the modernist proposal was the client. A family of four who who needed a home that would comfortably accommodate their lifestyle, and a place where they could take refuge from the bustle of the city.

While Trace Architects took care of the planning, architecture and interior staircase of the building (more on this below), YAM Studios were brought in to oversee key interior features. This included everything from the kitchen, joinery and bathroom to the lighting, finishes and furniture. Proving to be a perfect pairing for the project, YAM Studios ensured that the sleek nature of the exterior was carried through to the interior. This resulted in “harmonious living spaces where architectural elements and interior design complement each other perfectly” say YAM Studios.

Here we delve deeper into the design details of this new build fit for an L.A. hillside, as we catch up with YAM Studios to learn about how this project is a testament to the importance of collaboration.

How did the exterior shell inform what you wanted to achieve inside the property?

“The exterior played a significant role in shaping the interior scheme. When YAM Studios joined the project, the exterior shell design was already fully developed, and we wanted to ensure consistency throughout the interior. The clean lines of the architecture, combined with the textured brick, inspired a more minimalist approach that still embraced the use of texture. The warmth of the brick influenced the decision to use warm smoked oak inside, adding a touch of warmth while maintaining a sophisticated and urban feel.”

How does the design improve the functionality of the space?

“Ample storage was integrated throughout the home to accommodate the client’s belongings. The joinery played a significant role in the design, becoming a key feature that added character to the spaces while functioning as a seamless skin within the building.”

How was the staircase made?

“A sister company of Trace Architects, Create stair, were responsible for overseeing the staircase design, including the purchase of the perforated panels. After finalising the design, they collaborated with a skilled local metalworker who brought the concept to life.”

What does urban living mean to you? How did this inspire your work on this project?

“For me, “urban living” represents a vibrant and dynamic lifestyle, where the fast-paced rhythm of work and play intertwines seamlessly. Life in the city is bustling and constantly moving, filled with endless opportunities and cultural experiences. Amongst all the busy opportunities it’s crucial to have a home that serves as a sanctuary—a place where one can retreat, slow down, and recharge.”

“I am passionate about creating homes that offer this kind of refuge. I believe in designing spaces that are simple and uncluttered, where the senses aren’t overwhelmed but instead gently soothed. Such environments allow people to truly breathe, unwind, and find a sense of calm away from the hustle and bustle of city life. A home should be a place where balance is restored, offering comfort and tranquility in contrast to the energy and excitement of urban living.”

Tell us something about the project that we can’t see from the pictures?

“One thing that never can be communicated with pictures is the execution of the project and the immense amount of work required to bring a new build home to life. This project was particularly challenging for everyone involved due to its complex construction. It took a great deal of commitment and effort from everyone, including the client, to successfully complete and bring this project to fruition.”
