The Nordics | Nordic Sustainable Chairs – the winners

The “HÅG Capisco” is designed by Peter Opsvik.

International branding project, The Nordics  – created by The Nordic Council of Ministers and design associations – has unveiled the five winners for their sustainable chairs competition this autumn. The goal of the competition itself was to raise awareness regarding the importance of sustainable design in the climate debate during the UN Climate Summit this December, where the five winning designs will feature prominently in the summit’s exhibition on sustainability at the ‘Nordic Pavillion’.

The competition was further promoted by its cherry-picked partners, who were also judging the event. This included DOGA in Norway, the Danish Design Centre, the Iceland Design Centre, Ornamo in Finland and Svensk Form in Sweden. The way in which it worked was that each country had its own national jury who chose a winner from the many amazing contributions that were entered.

“In a truly democratic way, we have reached out to all Nordic designers to take part of the competition, not just established companies and producers. The five winning chairs will showcase Nordic design to the world leaders and will emphasise the important role design can play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The winning chairs move the borders of what is considered to be sustainable design thinking.

The winners have managed to combine beautiful and unique Nordic design with sustainable thinking. The chairs are great conversation pieces on how design thinking can contribute to solve complicated issues, such as the climate problems. We also hope they ignite a discussion on the future of sustainable design.” Tobias Grut, Brand Manager for The Nordics.

After the exposure of the event – more than 30,000 people are expected to participate during the UN Climate Summit (COP24) – the winning chairs will be showcased and displayed at Designwerk in Copenhagen for a year.
