Showcasing and recognising the best of material innovation from across the globe, the esteemed Surface Design Awards has opened for entries for 2022.
Celebrating the most extraordinary and sustainable implementation of surface materials in architectural projects from around the world, the last edition of the Surface Design Awards attracted a 107 entries from a plethora of countries (15 in fact) including the likes of India, Egypt, Italy, China, San Marino, Oman, and the USA. And, last year’s Supreme Winner went – for a second year running – to a project both designed and located in India: Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Center in Pune, India was designed by IMK Architects (the client was Symbiosis Society, Pune).
With the arrival of the 2022 Awards comes a new category: The Architectural Photography Award. Recognising and embracing photography focusing on architecture and interior design (including exterior or interior images), the new category invites both amateurs and professional photographers to enter. Alongside this new category, others include Commercial Building (Interior and Exterior), Housing (Interior and Exterior), Landscape + Public Realm, Light & Surface (Interior and Exterior), Public Building (Interior and Exterior) and Temporary Structure. Sustainability will be, of course, a leading criteria for every entry placed, and requires that applicants produce a statement and calculation for the carbon footprint of the cladding/materials used.
The Surface Design Awards 2022 judging panel of industry experts is, notably, Co-Chaired by Basha-Franklin’s Creative Director, Nicola Osborn and Joseph Henry, Principal Project Officer in the Greater London Authority’s Regeneration Team. The judges are Rosie Gibbs-Stevenson, Curator of Public Programmes at The Architecture Foundation, Jonathan Hagos, Director of Freehaus, Rosie Haslem from Streetsense, Giles Miller from Giles Miller Studio, Alex Morgan, Founding Partner of Morgan Capital, Sumitra Upham, Senior Curator of Public Programmes at The Design Museum and Sam Williams, Commercial Development Manager at Argent LLP.
Once entries close, the judges for the awards will work in two teams in order to select a shortlist and winner for each of the categories. Once this is complete, they will then join forces to select the Supreme Winner, the best of the best. The awards presentation ceremony for the event will be on Thursday 10 February 2022 as part of the annual Surface Design Show (which takes place from 8-10th February 2022 at London’s Business Design Centre).
Please note that projects can be submitted by the client, architect or designer, surface supplier or their representatives. Entries will be accepted via this page until Friday 24th September 2021.
