Pappelina celebrates 25 years of design innovation | The Linen collection

Pappelina celebrates 25 years of design, innovation and crafting timeless rugs that can be slotted into any interior scheme. And to honour this milestone of revolutionising the rug industry to become a more sustainable one, Pappelina travels back to its roots of traditional techniques.

For the Linen collection, Pappelina puts the geometric patterns aside, and instead adopts a subtle palette of woven neutrals that embrace the “natural hues of Scandinavian landscapes.” We caught up with Pappelina’s Founder, Paulina Lundström, to talk all things design and learn about how the brand is celebrating its 25th anniversary…

Congratulations on 25 years of Pappelina! Can you talk us through the key pieces in the new collection?

“Thank you! Our new collection is centred around The Linen Collection, which blends the natural softness of European linen with the durability of PVC. Key pieces include the LINA Limited Edition, a tribute to our roots, and the EMM & SAM rugs, which showcase our commitment to craftsmanship and contemporary design.”

A brief history of Pappelina?

“Pappelina started in 1999 with a vision to revive traditional Swedish weaving techniques. Over the years, we’ve evolved by combining modern materials with these techniques to create iconic, durable, and stylish rugs. Our commitment to quality and design has allowed us to grow into a globally recognised brand.”

How do the rugs consider sustainability?

“Sustainability is at the core of our production. We use high-quality, phthalate-free PVC, ensuring longevity and reducing the need for replacements. Our local production in Leksand, Sweden, minimises transportation emissions, and we are continuously exploring new ways to reduce our environmental impact.”

What about durability?

“Durability is a hallmark of Pappelina rugs. Each rug is made with precision and care, using materials that are designed to withstand daily wear and tear. Our rugs are not only beautiful but also built to last, ensuring they remain a staple in your home for years to come.”

How does your making process blend traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation?

“Our rugs are partially handmade. We weave our rugs on traditional looms, a process that requires meticulous attention to detail. By combining this age-old craftsmanship with innovative materials like PVC, we create products that honour tradition while meeting contemporary demands for durability and style.”

What was your design process for this collection?

“The design process began with a deep respect for our heritage. I drew inspiration from our original designs, especially the use of linen, and blended it with modern aesthetics. Each piece is carefully crafted to balance tradition with innovation, resulting in a collection that feels both timeless and contemporary.”

What type of home is perfect for a Pappelina piece?

“Pappelina rugs are incredibly versatile and can fit into any home, whether it’s a minimalist, modern space or a more traditional, cosy environment. They add texture, colour, and warmth, making them a perfect complement to a wide range of interior styles.”

What inspired the colour palettes for the Linen collection?

“The Linen Collection’s colour palette is inspired by the natural hues of Scandinavian landscapes. We wanted to evoke a sense of calm and connection to nature, using soft, earthy tones that highlight the beauty of linen and bring a serene, sophisticated touch to any room.”

Your favourite piece from this collection?

“It’s hard to choose, but the LINA Limited Edition holds a special place in my heart. It’s a nod to our beginnings and the perfect blend of tradition and modern design, making it a true representation of Pappelina’s journey over the past 25 years.”
