Conceived back in 2000, Naturalmat – with its ethos of using only raw materials that were natural, sustainable and, where possible, certified organic – decided to do things differently.
It all began over two decades ago, when keen sailors Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall were experimenting with the use of breathable, natural fibres as an alternative to synthetics commonly used on boats that were not only notoriously warm, but largely uncomfortable as well. Believing that natural fibres were undoubtedly best – from both an environmental and comfort angle – the brand set about crafting and designing a natural fibre-filled and constructed mattress (without any chemical additives whatsoever). This sustainable thread is sewn throughout every layer of the business, from the natural mattresses, to their design process, to their packaging (which is strictly environmentally friendly too).
The brand is in the same family boat yard (now solar-powered bed workshop) on the banks of the River Exe in Devon where they still make everything by hand, sticking to their same founding principles and they’re still as fussy Notably, the brand is still in the original family boat yard (now a solar-powered bed workshop) on the banks of the River Exe in Devon where they first started, still crafting everything by hand, sticking to their same founding principles and delightfully still as fussy as ever in their sourcing—buying wool solely from certified organic farms within a 50-mile radius of the Naturalmat HQ.
It’s therefore not surprising then that Naturalmat were honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development – a badge the brand very proudly wears as they celebrate their 20th birthday this year.
“We believe that people, not machines, make a superior, longer-lasting product. Our team of craftspeople ensure every stitch, every fibre, every tufting button and every cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked. When a mattress leaves our factory, we are confident it will give years of long-lasting comfort.” Naturalmat
