Casa Ry, a project designed for a family of two and their treasured falcons, showcases a renovated farmhouse set peacefully in the Denmark countryside. Effortlessly reinterpreting the traditional Danish farmhouse, the build is constructed out of a main building for living alongside two barns (one to house the birds and one to host a workshop). At the heart of the project is a central courtyard which connects the surrounding buildings and reinterprets the quiet, simple layout of the original Danish farmhouse incorporating the three long, abstract volumes with a gable roof.

Visitors are enticed to enter the property via the courtyard along a concrete path therefore experiencing the entire project from this perspective. Situated in open countryside, between clear, flowing landscape and a village, the main building is protected via the two barns, allowing for it to take advantage of both the view onto the central connecting courtyard and the panoramic views extending over the rolling countryside on the other side. The minimalistic, Nordic feel of this property is emphasised further by the architect firm’s clever approach to concealing both the gutters and the chimneys within the cedar-clad façade.

Inside this Nordic vibe is continued with a flowing, open-plan layout. Taking centre stage at the core of the home is the dining room, it’s tall ceilings flanked by smoked oak furniture. One end is dedicated to an integrated kitchen, while at the other sits a built-in stove. Polished concrete flooring flows throughout, linking to and emphasising the more private areas of the build, as well as creating a link between the interior of the reinvented farmhouse and its outside. Integrated with geothermal heat, the project is also low-energy.
