Ace Hotel Sydney will be the first property by the US design-led hotel group in Australia when it opens its doors in mid-2022.
Atelier Ace has partnered with Flack Studio to put a signature design stamp on the hotel that accommodates 264 rooms over 18 storeys within a historic Tyne House brick factory in Surry Hills, Sydney. The fascinating history of the site, which was one of Australia’s first ceramic kilns, along with the cinematic colour palette of the country’s diverse landscape have inspired the overall interior scheme.
With its first stake in the Southern Hemisphere, Atelier Ace has set out to make an impression in keeping with their renowned ethos and using an approach to “bring together narratives, artists and materials that speak to the building, to the site, and to the city”, as they explain. So, in planning the conversion of the building they have created a balance between communal and private spaces, with active commons for culture, commerce, art and community. There will be a ground floor restaurant, bar and cafe in the hotel’s communal lobby and an impressive rooftop bar and restaurant with city views.
“We love the country’s distinctive brand of modernism, particularly in the use of local organic materials, and were lucky enough to find a perfectly modernist partner in Flack Studio. David Flack’s eye for colour and space is completely singular – a dream design collaborator for our first hotel in Australia,” says Brad Wilson, President, Ace Hotel Group.
In what they refer to as “a call and response with the city’s past”, Flack Studio have used an eclectic mix of natural materials, textures, and tones that honour times gone by. For example, you’ll find acoustic textural straw walls adorning the guest rooms and striking ochre red off-form concrete staircase in its lobby. Custom-designed furniture, joinery, and lighting by Flack Studio all display a generous respect of craftsmanship throughout the hotel.
We all know from personal experience that it can be the small details that make a stay a truly memorable one, and it’s evident that Ace Hotel Sydney is looking to tick those boxes. This is surely going to be a must-visit for design-savvy travellers – watch out Sydney, here we come!
Reservations are open for 1st May 2022 onwards and can be made at acehotel.com/sydney. Rooms start from $359 (high season).
